Seneca’s Samarah Mittag – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by John Cotton Roofing

Not only has she maintained a 3.8 GPA, participated in Student Council, and earned her position amongst the other members of the National Honors Society – she is also astoundingly involved in all things basketball. A volunteer with her school’s PIP basketball kids program, biannual basketball camps, and an occasional weekend referee Mittag exemplifies what it means to be a team player.

Mittag told VYPE that her favorite basketball memory is “winning basketball districts this last season.” She vividly recalls “the crowd and the atmosphere,” a memory she will remember “forever.” A close second to that feeling would be “going to Branson with the basketball team.” This recollection earned the description of “the most fun” Mittag recalls from “the last year.”

Much of this could be attributed to Mittag’s relationship with her team. Mittag says she has “been playing with some of these girls since 3rd grade, and our relationships continue to flourish.” She also told us, “it will be sad when we play our last game together, but some of the best and worst days of my life have been spent with them.”

However, before that happens, she hopes to “have the leadership that Makayla had” with her. Mittag credits Makayla French as “the teammate that left the biggest impression” on her life. Mittag said, “She was always someone I could talk to and pushed me to be my better self each practice and game.”
