In her first year as Seneca High School’s head cheer coach, Shelby Perry has enjoyed returning to her alma mater after spending a few years out-of-state in college. We caught up with coach Perry to get her thoughts on being the Seneca coach, the team and what the future holds for the program.
VYPE: Where did you get your start in coaching and where did you go to college?
Perry: I cheered for Seneca when I was in high school and won a state championship in 2011. I have always loved cheerleading and being a part of the atmosphere, so when I saw the position was open, I applied first thing. I attended college at Oklahoma State University and received my bachelor’s in communication Disorders and Sciences.
VYPE: What do you love most about being a coach at Seneca?
Perry: The traditions. It is such an honor to come back as a coach and see that the traditions that were in place when I was a cheerleader are still carrying on. Seneca varsity cheerleading has always had a big reputation. Every cheerleading event we have attended, everyone has known who we are and what we stand for.
VYPE: Do you teach a class? If so, what do you teach?
Perry: I am a Speech Language Pathology Assistant at Seneca Elementary School.
VYPE: What do you expect from your cheerleaders every year?
Perry: With this being my first year coaching, my biggest expectation for the athletes was to always work hard and hold your head high. I try and encourage them in their schooling, their activities and being all around great humans.
VYPE: What does the future of Seneca cheer look like?
Perry: The future of Seneca Cheer is to carry on the traditions and the legacy set forth by our past cheerleaders. We work hard and it pays off when we get to bring home another state title.
