Seneca athlete Kordy Hancock told VYPE in a recent interview that “My favorite part about being on this team is that we all cheer each other on. Even if we are not winning we are cheering each other on even on little victories that we have like a good shot, a charge taken or a free throw made”. At the moment Hancock is working “to always improve, learn from my mistakes, be a good teammate, be coachable, and get stronger”.
Hancock, who participates in Varsity Cheer, Varsity Softball, and Power lifting, and travel softball, shared with us “Playing sports has taught me that if you want something you have to work for it. Nothing is given to you. You have to show up every day and put the work in and you also have to put work in on your own. Playing sports has taught me that if you get beat you have to work harder next time if you want a different outcome. A team is like a family and everyone has to be working together for the same goal or the family isn’t thriving”.
Speaking of family – Hancock explained “The best advice I’ve received is from my sister, who was also a multi-sport athlete. She is who I call when I am frustrated and tired. She always tells me to keep pushing and keeping working”. Although she expressed “My parents are the ones that inspire me the most because they constantly support on everything I do and help me get through things whenever I feel like giving up. They sacrifice a lot of stuff for me and my sports.”
“I want to say thank you to my coaches. It is very difficult to coach a multi-sport athlete. My coaches coordinate and work together so that I am always informed on where I need to be and they share me so that I can participate in more than one thing. I love all my sports so much I appreciate them doing what they do, including Coach Hanes’ color coded schedules she prints with the keys at the bottom. Also, thank you to my parents for running me a million places and taking me to batting practices, tumbling, early morning practices and games and keeping me focused when I get tired” said Hancock.
