Seneca Volleyball coach Rachel Ayo recently spoke with Prep Sports in an interview about the team and their 2023 season. Ayo expressed that “the girls are so hardworking. Many of the girls took on new roles and positions they had never played. They knew that this was going to be a large rebuilding year due to losing 5 graduating starters from last season’s team. They have all improved so much throughout the season and are playing their best volleyball at the right time.”
“I have a great group of seniors. Having 4 seniors that are not only great athletes, but great leaders on and off the floor makes this job so enjoyable, even through the hard losses. Our underclassmen have really stepped up this year, and seeing their growth makes me so proud to be their coach. We have a lot of fun personalities and their energy is always fun to be around” said Ayo.
We asked the Lady Indians coach about any dynamic duos that have emerged in the team this season and she shared “I would say the connection between our setter, Anna, and our outside hitter Jera. When they can connect, our team’s energy increases and we are really able to compete with any team we face. I could also say that my senior captains (Jera and my libero, Ella) are a dynamic duo. They feed off of one another’s energy and are constantly pushing each other in practices and games”.
These girls also represent their school in other ways including their participation in various clubs and fundraising efforts. Ayo told us “I believe Jera Jameson, Ella Graham, and Danessa Macy are members of the National Honor Society”. She went on to give us a few details on the very imaginative way the team shows their support to those battling breast cancer. Explaining “We do have a tradition where we host a Mr. Volleyball night in the month of October. We have a “court” and select 3 senior candidates, a junior, sophomore, and freshman candidate. The boys have 2 weeks to raise money for a member of our community battling breast cancer. Our Mr. Volleyball night is October 12th. The Senior representative that raises the most money is then crowned Mr. Volleyball”.
